Persistent bad breath (halitosis) can cause significant social discomfort. In most cases, however, it is a symptom of another problem – gum disease, untreated caries or dry mouth – and can be resolved with proper diagnostics.
Main causes of halitosis
- Bacterial plaque and tartar – up to 80% of cases
- Gum inflammation and periodontitis
- Untreated caries
- Tongue bacteria on the back of the tongue
- Dry mouth (xerostomia)
- Certain foods (garlic, onion)
- Smoking and alcohol
- GI tract problems
- Diabetes, kidney or liver disease
What you can do at home
- Brush twice a day for 2 minutes (teeth, gums, tongue)
- Daily flossing
- A dedicated tongue scraper
- Drink enough water to avoid dry mouth
- Sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva
- Limit garlic and onion intake
When to see a dentist
If home care does not resolve the problem in 2 weeks, a specialist consultation is needed. First step: professional cleaning and full oral exam.

Most cases resolve in 1–2 visits. If the cause is non-dental, we refer to a gastroenterologist or ENT specialist.
