A dental prosthesis is a prosthetic construction that replaces missing teeth. Modern dentistry offers three main types.
1. Fixed prostheses
- Crown – single tooth; zirconia, E-max or metal-ceramic
- Bridge – connects neighboring teeth across a missing tooth
- Veneers and lumineers – aesthetic front-tooth restorations
Pros: indistinguishable from natural teeth, lifespan 10–20 years, full function.
Cons: requires preparation (grinding) of neighboring teeth.
2. Removable prostheses
- Full denture – when all teeth are lost (acrylic, nylon)
- Partial denture – replaces several teeth
- Cast clasp denture – metal framework, more comfortable
Pros: affordable, removable.
Cons: limited comfort and aesthetics; jaw bone shrinks over time.
3. Implant-supported prostheses (most modern)
- Implant + crown – restores a single tooth
- All-on-4 / All-on-6 – full arch on 4 or 6 implants
- Implant-supported overdenture
Pros: closest to natural teeth, preserves jaw bone, neighbors untouched, lasts 25+ years.
Cons: higher initial cost and surgical phase.
Which one to choose?
Depends on:
- Number and location of missing teeth
- Bone condition
- Budget
- Age and general health
- Aesthetic requirements
For an accurate plan, 3D diagnostics (CBCT) and a prosthodontist consultation are required.
