Recovery after dental implantation concerns many patients. Proper care speeds the process and supports successful osseointegration.
First 24 hours
- Cold compress on the cheek (15 min on, 15 min off)
- Painkillers and antibiotics as prescribed
- Avoid hot, hard and spicy food
- Do not rinse — the blood clot protects the implant
- No physical exertion
Days 2–7
- Soft food: purées, yogurt, soup
- Don't chew on the implant side
- Hygiene — soft brush, anti-inflammatory rinse
- Mild swelling and bruising are normal
- Quit smoking (the single most important factor)
First month
- Soft to moderately firm food
- The surgical site fully closes
- Suture removal (if applicable) at 7–14 days
- Return to sports after 2 weeks
3–6 months (osseointegration)
The implant fuses with the bone during this phase. Follow-ups every 4–6 weeks. The permanent crown is placed after this stage.
When to call the dentist urgently
- Severe pain lasting more than 3 days
- Increasing swelling
- Pus or strong odor
- Implant mobility
- Fever
