Mild sensitivity after a filling for a few days is normal. But certain symptoms can signal a problem and need a follow-up visit.
What is normal
- Sensitivity to cold and hot for 1–2 weeks
- Mild discomfort when biting
- Numbness for 2–4 hours after anesthesia
When to see a dentist
- Pain lasting more than 2 weeks
- Throbbing pain worse at night (pulpitis sign)
- High filling — bite issue
- Swelling or pus near the tooth
- Filling cracked or fell out
Possible causes
| Cause | What is done |
|---|---|
| High filling | Adjustment (5 min) |
| Pulpitis | Root canal treatment |
| Surface sensitivity | Fluoride paste, desensitizer |
| Filling crack | Re-filling |
| Secondary caries | Re-preparation |
What you can do at home
- First 24 hours — avoid very hot and cold
- Don't chew on the filling side (24 hours)
- OTC painkiller as directed
- Floss gently — don't dislodge the filling
Prevention
Modern filling materials (composite, ceramic) properly placed last 7–10 years. Every 6 months a check-up, professional hygiene and early caries detection are the best defense.
