Dental treatment under sedation in Baku: when it is needed and how the decision is made

Fear of the dentist, a strong gag reflex or a large amount of work in one session are the main reasons patients ask about sedation. At German Dental Clinic most treatment is done under local anaesthesia and is painless. The sedation option is discussed separately and used only when there are medical indications: whether you need it and which type suits you is decided by the dentist at the consultation, after going through your health history.

Local anaesthesia, sedation and general anaesthesia — the difference

  • Local anaesthesia. Only the area being treated is numbed and the patient is fully conscious. It is enough for most fillings, root canals and surgical procedures.
  • Minimal sedation. For example, nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) through a nasal mask: the patient is conscious, can talk and is simply relaxed; the effect wears off quickly.
  • Moderate sedation. Medication by tablet or intravenously: the patient is drowsy but responds when spoken to and breathes unaided; an escort is needed afterwards.
  • General anaesthesia. Full loss of consciousness with assisted ventilation — in an operating theatre or hospital setting, with an anaesthesia team. It is used for complex maxillofacial surgery and in special cases; if your situation needs it, the dentist will tell you separately.

More detail: Sedation and general anaesthesia in dentistry: when they are used.

When sedation is considered

  • strong fear of the dentist (dental phobia) that makes you put treatment off;
  • a strong gag reflex that gets in the way of treatment;
  • long sessions and treating several teeth in one visit;
  • very anxious or very young children who need a lot of treatment (pediatric dentistry);
  • patients with special needs.

How the decision is made

  1. Consultation and diagnostics. The dentist examines your teeth, assesses how much treatment is needed (diagnostics) and asks what worries you.
  2. Medical history. Chronic conditions, the medication you take, allergies, reactions to previous anaesthesia — this is what determines whether sedation is possible.
  3. Choosing the method. If there are indications, the dentist explains the suitable option, the conditions it is carried out in and how to prepare. If there are none, other ways of dealing with the fear are offered.

Safety standards

  • general health is assessed before sedation;
  • pulse and blood oxygen are monitored during the procedure;
  • deep sedation and general anaesthesia are given only by an anaesthesiologist;
  • observation after the procedure, and going home only with an escort.

Preparation and afterwards

  • the dentist gives you exact instructions in advance on fasting and on taking your medication — follow them;
  • tell the dentist about every medication you take;
  • after moderate sedation, do not drive or make important decisions for the rest of the day;
  • a child always goes home with a parent.

Fear can be managed without sedation too

Often sedation is not needed to reduce fear. The dentist explains each step in advance, the appointment is kept short and predictable, and a signal for a pause is agreed beforehand. Digital protocols also cut the number of visits: in the clinic’s own CAD/CAM laboratory a single crown can be made within one appointment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sedation and general anaesthesia?
Under sedation the patient is relaxed but breathes unaided and responds when spoken to, and under minimal sedation stays fully conscious. General anaesthesia is a full loss of consciousness with assisted ventilation and is carried out in an operating theatre or hospital setting.

Is sedation safe for dental treatment?
When the indications are respected, health is assessed beforehand and pulse and oxygen are monitored during the procedure, sedation follows modern protocols. Whether it is possible in your case is decided by the dentist from your medical history.

Is sedation used for children?
For very anxious or very young children, and when a lot of treatment is needed, the sedation option is discussed separately and used only when there are medical indications. A short, child-friendly appointment without fear is always tried first.

Can I drive after sedation?
Not on the same day after moderate sedation — you need an escort to take you home. The dentist explains separately what applies after minimal sedation.

Does sedation take the pain away?
Sedation mainly takes away anxiety; pain relief comes from local anaesthesia, so the two are usually used together.

How do I book treatment under sedation?
Book a consultation and mention when booking that you are interested in sedation. After the examination and your medical history, the dentist will tell you whether there are indications and which option suits you.
