In modern orthodontics there are two main options for correcting bite: traditional braces and clear aligners. Both are effective, but suit different cases.
Traditional braces
- Metal or aesthetic (ceramic, zirconia) brackets
- Fixed to the teeth
- More effective for complex anomalies
- Duration: 12–24 months on average
- Check-up every 4–6 weeks
Clear aligners
- Invisible plastic trays (Invisalign and equivalents)
- Removable — taken out for eating and brushing
- Aesthetic and comfortable
- Duration: 6–18 months
- New set every 1–2 weeks
When aligners are not suitable
- Severe crowding
- Severe bite anomalies
- Children with primary teeth
- Patient cannot wear trays 22 hours/day
Comparison
| Parameter | Braces | Aligners |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Visible | Nearly invisible |
| Removable | No | Yes |
| Complex cases | More effective | Limited |
| Hygiene | Harder | Easier |
| Discomfort | First weeks | Each new tray |
The right method can only be chosen after orthodontic diagnostics — photography, intraoral scan and lateral cephalometric X-ray.
