How to Choose an Orthodontist: 6 Criteria

Orthodontic treatment is a long process lasting 1–2 years. The wrong choice of orthodontist leads to wasted time, complications and even bite disorders. This article lists 6 criteria for choosing an orthodontist.

1. Education and certifications

An orthodontist is not just a dentist. It is a separate specialty that requires 2–4 years of residency after dental school. Ask about university, specialization, continuing education.

2. Diagnostic technology

Modern orthodontics requires: 3D CBCT X-ray, intraoral scanner, lateral cephalometric X-ray, photography (face, teeth). Without these, no precise plan is possible.

3. Individual treatment plan

"Your case is simple, we'll just put braces on" is a red flag. A good orthodontist spends 30–45 minutes on the first consultation and presents a detailed plan: duration, stages, expected outcome (ideally with digital simulation).

4. Method choice

A good orthodontist does not push one method as a "universal solution". Metal, ceramic, zirconia, lingual braces and clear aligners each have their indications. The right one for your case should be recommended.

5. Communication

Open answers, plain-language explanation, discussion of possible complications, presentation of alternatives — signs of a confident specialist. Irritation or dismissive nodding are red flags.

6. Multidisciplinary work

Complex cases (orthognathic surgery, TMJ, combined with implants) require cooperation with other specialists (surgeon, implantologist, gnathologist). Same clinic is a plus.
