Retainer After Braces: Why It Is Needed and How Long to Wear

After braces come off, the most critical phase of orthodontic treatment begins — the retainer phase. Skipping it can undo 1–2 years of work.

Why a retainer is needed

Teeth have a "memory effect" — they tend to return to the old position, especially in the first 6–12 months after braces. A retainer holds teeth in the new position and prevents relapse.

Retainer types

  • Fixed (lingual wire) — a thin wire bonded to the back of the front teeth. Invisible, cannot be forgotten. Usually on 6 front teeth.
  • Clear tray (Essix) — similar to an aligner. Worn overnight.
  • Hawley retainer — acrylic with wire. Long-lasting but visible.

Often combined: fixed on front teeth + removable at night.

How long to wear?

  • First 6 months: full-time (removable type) — off only for meals
  • 6–12 months: nighttime only
  • After 1 year: 3–4 nights per week, lifelong

Fixed retainers last 5–10 years without removal. They can stay longer if in good condition.

Retainer care

  • Fixed: daily cleaning with superfloss or interdental brushes
  • Removable: cool water, weekly effervescent tablet
  • Do not use hot water — plastic warps
  • Remove during sports

If lost or broken

Contact your orthodontist immediately — teeth start shifting within 48 hours. Delay leads to relapse.
